Healthy Spaces & Places Healthy Spaces & Places

Making it Happen

Find out more about the processes involved in designing and developing healthy spaces and places.

Healthy planning calls for multiple tools and cross-sectoral approaches.

It cannot be stated enough: everyday decisions make a difference. Small changes can count as much as big or strategic ones.

Many different actions at all levels of the planning system can lead to improved health and wellbeing, as indicated in the Australian Planning Systems – Health Interventions Table.

What is required is for planners to routinely consider planning and design for people movements as well as car movements.

Actions that can contribute to the process of creating healthy spaces and places include the following:

  1. Research
  2. Integration
  3. Implementation
  4. Education & Training
  5. Partnerships
  6. Measuring Success
Process actions can be tailored to fit individual projects, policies and developments and can assist in achieving healthy planning outcomes.
